How to Clean Used Wine Barrels


It goes without saying that wine barrels play a significant role in modern winemaking!

However, once you have your spirit, it is very important to clean the barrel. You may want to dive into the same spirit again but drinking them takes no time compared to aging them. Also, the aging period differs as per the winemaker’s preference.

But before you go ahead, ensure to clean the used wine barrels for better taste and increased lifespan. The sooner you start aging them, sooner you can enjoy your next batch.

First of all, different barrels must be used for different spirits because not cleaning the barrel may not remove the flavors from the previous batch. So clean the barrels before reuse.

In case of having the same spirits, there is no immediate need to clean them. Frequent cleaning may reduce the lifespan of the barrel and the outer surface may get chipped off. However, cleaning of used wine barrels of aging wine must not be done after every batch, because as mentioned, it may take off some years from its life.

--Barrel Maintenance Kit--


Please keep barrel maintenance or a barrel cleaning kit handy. The kit will include cleaning tablets, neutralizing acid, sterilizing tablets.

Here are simple steps to clean wine barrels-
  • Start by filling the barrel with a mixture of cleaning tablets and water. Make sure to use warm water
  • Leave it for 24 hours
  • Now, empty the barrel completely and thoroughly rinse it 3 times with plain water.
  • After that, fill the barrel with a solution of warm water and neutralizing acid.
  • Let it settle for 15 minutes.
  • Now, empty the barrel and rinse through 3 times with plain water.
The ratio for the cleaning solution is to be followed as per the cleaning instructions.

--Cold water soak--


This method of cleansing takes approximately two days and slightly more time for old barrels.
  1. First of all, fill 1/3rd part of the barrel with cold water and leave it for 3-4 hours.
  2. Again, fill the remaining 2/3rd barrel and leave it for 3-4 hours.
  3. Next, top it up.
  4. After some time, you will see that the barrel stops seeping and seals itself.
And remember, if a brand new barrel seeps for more than 2 days, then it is likely to have some issues and needs to be replaced soon.
As a measure of caution, barrels must be rinsed immediately after it gets empty to prevent the growth of spoilage organisms in them.

For time being, before the cleaning process takes place, it is advisable to simply rinse the barrel for quite a period of time.
